Remembrances

I am the daughter of Sylvester Sherfinski who served with the 555th A Company. My dad met my mother, Stella, after the war and they were married in 1946. Together they raised three daughters and a son in Wausau, WI where "Sy" worked for Wausau Papers for nearly 40 years. He passed away in 1986 leaving his family who he loved so well. Stella celebrates her 90th birthday this year and shares their legacy with seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Thanks to Jim Behe for this site. Like other children of WWII veterans we can now fill in the gaps and express our pride in honoring our fathers and all vets.

My mom's favorite uncle was Paul Behe. As children we always looked forward to visits with Uncle Paul. To me he was a hero. Certainly one of that "Greatest Generation" Tom Brokaw wrote about. I write to pay homage to a great man who obviously served with great men and for whose sacrifices we remain eternally grateful. My own son, Matt, Ranger- and Airborne-qualified, just finished a tour of duty as a Captain with the 25th US Army Infantry in Baghdad, Iraq. Matt proudly carries some of that Behe blood in his veins. Thanks, Jim Behe, for sharing and preserving this story.
God bless all who served, Pat Joyce
(son of Jack Joyce and Mary Louise "Bee" Behe)

I am the son of Duane Nickel, but most new him as Bud Nickel. My mother recently received a letter about this web sight. So I had to check it out. What you have done here is a wonderful thing! I remember growing up and always knowing that when the time for the 555th reunion was coming up, that mom and dad would be there. The men he served with meant great things to him! My father never really told me and much about what he had done while serving this great county I only got bits and pieces as I was growing up. You have filled in many of the blanks for me. Thank you so much!

Hi:

Nice to be here and delighted to see another engineer site. We need to bring all this to light. Great job!

My dad was a 540th Combat Engineer. I dedicated a website to him and his fellow engineers of WWII. Stop by for a visit at VI Corps Combat Engineers. Also getting ready to release part one of my documentary, No Bridge Too Far, in honor of these great men.

I am Paul's nephew. I am 84 years of age. I was in the U.S. Navy from 7/43 until 5/46. Uncle Paul was in the Army at the same time. He was a wonderful guy, very witty and easy going. I have many good memories of him. Even though he lived with my family for a while after he got out of the service, I was unaware that he had a photograpic album, and, especially of this magnitude. Great job Jim in putting this together.

My Dad was Paul F. Behe, who served with H&S Co. of the 555th. He was very proud of his service with the unit. Dad worked for the USO before the war. He told me once that although he was old enough (35) to not serve, he felt he had to after seeing all the young men going in. After the war, he rejoined the USO, where he met my Mom, who also worked there. They eventually settled in Detroit where he retired from Ford in 1973. He served 15+ years in the Army reserve before retiring as a Lt. Colonel. Mom, Mary K. Behe, is still alive and there are 7 children, 12 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild.
